The urban area measured by summing the areas of towns in Berkshire as shown on OS landranger maps is approximately 16,000 hectares (13%): this does not include villages, farm and other rural buildings, roads and railways.
The approximate area of built land (including gardens), assessed as the difference between the sum of the phase 1 habitat allocations and the total area of Berkshire is approximately 27,000 hectares.
Gardens, which are a particularly important habitat in urban tetrads, occupy 11,000 hectares.
